IS TASTE REAL?

Can there be any wrong opinions in todays society?

IT FEELS GOOD TO BE BACK…

Happy New Year! Five days in is still pretty new right? Written Mirror welcomes you to the year two thousand and eighteen or as the cool kids say, ‘Twenty Eighteen’. Everyone is likely on their journey towards their personal resolutions…

I hear gyms worldwide are already packed to capacity! Pavements are being caressed roughly by new pairs of running shoes and the organic isles in grocery stores are constantly sold out…

SELF IMPOSED DOWNTIME

Having taken a brief break from writing, the work has recommenced in earnest. The break was self imposed as a way of allowing the mind to relax a little whilst taking in new experiences.

WHAT DID YOU COME ACROSS ON YOUR BREAK?

A few interesting conversations on media based texts popped up organically. It has lead to quite fascinating and unexpected reactions. A burning question continually surfaced, “Is taste real?”. Is there even such a thing (In the context of analysis) as good and bad anymore? This is not a joke, it is a serious question which requires an answer. Please help!

WHERE ELSE DID YOU NOTICE THIS?

Everything from sports teams, players, movies, TV, music and everything in between seems to be narrative and opinion based. No one seems to be able to agree unanimously on what is good and what is bad.

WHAT IS THE DECIDING FACTOR?

Analytics has become an integral part of these debates and often serves to minimalise the impact of intangibles where it comes to the aforementioned topics. How many weeks did someone spend at number one can now be a valid argument in defence of artistry. Player Efficiency Rating (PER) overrides the eye test and wins. The metrics used to compare things have so many caveats that in the end everyone pulls the old, “That’s your opinion and your entitled to it” card… Nobody relents, no consensus is reached…

WHAT ABOUT BODY OF WORK?

Comparing players legacies leaves you in a stalemate. Same with artists and movies/TV series. DC vs Marvel anyone? Nothing is unanimously bad and the same for being good. Another question that stems from this, “Is it bad for society?” Is taste really a thing of the past? Does this shape how we see other faucets of life? Our politicians, mass media, social problems? Are we less together than ever, or, has this amount of difference always quietly existed?

You can’t engage in these debates without someone being offended, even if all you are trying to do is make your case minus any extra curricular additives…

I SAID MARVEL IS BETTER!

IS THIS HOW IT WILL BE FROM NOW ON?

Will this ever revert to a consensus or is this makings of the new majority? There is no majority, everyone is right and hey look, gold medals for everybody!

THERE MUST BE SOMETHING TO BLAME…

Can we blame boxing for this? Probably not, but since there is no wrong answer! Pound for pound (P4P) is a ridiculous concept. Is it entertaining as a debate for fight fans? Sure! So is prime for prime! Funny enough it would probably end up being represented as (Pr4Pr) but there is no prime for prime ranking so there…

Much love for boxing by the way! Let’s hope 2018 brings the fights all fans of boxing want to see…

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THE LACK OF CONSENSUS?

That is a great question! At present there is no easy answer, no quick fix. You would think a great proportion will refuse to engage in these debates altogether. The rest will try to engage in every debate. Perhaps there is a happy medium where people won’t be upset and an agreed majority takes hold. It may end up being something arbitrary like an opinion poll which decides things. As we have seen with Brexit that can quite easily lead to an uninformed majority…

SHOULD I LIE TO AVOID DISGRUNTLED RESPONSES?

Of course not! As long as you are respectful and present a coherent argument, your participation should be valued. Should you fail to receive the same courtesy in return, you may wish to consider leaving the debate as soon as possible. There is absolutely no point in getting into a war of words (over taste), unless; it is a subject you are prepared to die on a hill for, in which case use your best judgement!

Lines will be drawn and feelings most likely hurt but if you’re not maliciously trolling that should not be your concern. If you think it unworthy of the hassle, then you are probably right. There isn’t a great deal worse than laying out a precise argument only for the other side to highlight a few choice words whilst very conveniently leaving out the rest.
