The City of Venice

I have spent the last seven days in this city and I have to say it is a very romantic place. It’s not cliche or forced you can genuinely feel the love in the air. There are couples everywhere you turn and although I travelled alone I can honestly say I did not feel out of place. It is a very welcoming place and the family feel is charming.

Sightseeing and The Canal

As for the sites there are many of Churches, museums and other landmarks which will occupy your time and bring out your inner Jimmy Olsen. Plenty to see and do and that’s even before you go for a boat ride along the grand canal or if you want the traditional experience, a Gondola ride would be your preferred choice.

The Food

The food in Italy I found very tasteful and this is from a guy who doesn’t like going to restaurants due to constantly being let down either by portion size or quality of taste. However, I have found the food to be of a really high standard so much so I am very sure of wanting to return to Italy in the near future.

Accommodation

There are many hotels/Villa’s so your choice will rely on your own personal taste and budget but having visited quite a few on my travels I must say that most are decent. I stayed outside of the main part of Venice i.e San Marco Square.

So there was a lot less traffic people wise and I think it allowed for more meaningful dialogue with the locals. The hotel staff know me by name so do the staff of the restaurants I visited.

I found the people very friendly and I was almost apologetic at times for speaking very little Italian. There was also something very satisfying being able to communicate with just key words (Ha-ha) “Me, Steak, Chips, Medium not rare) hand gestures tend to emphasize the rest.

For the guys reading this the eye candy is of a high standard the women are shapely and like compliments (If you can find any flying solo that is).

Souvenirs and Spending

For those of you planning on visiting the spending side of things is where you just might wince. Things are reasonably pricey here from food to souvenirs even travel it all adds up. A hand crafted Venetian mask for instance can set you back anywhere from 10-25 Euros so bare that in mind before you promise everyone gifts. Another piece of advice learn the language I’m pretty certain there is more room for haggling if you can verbally joust with sellers. I got away with a little bit but having to play charades for every word gets tiresome quickly.

Who Should Visit The City of Venice

I think Venice is ideal for couples or honeymoons it works as a family vacation spot too. I would not necessarily recommend it for people travelling alone unless you would like to remain alone and in that case I would suggest staying at least half hour away from San Marco.

The ideal length of stay here I would believe is around 4 days. That is enough to see all the sites and if you have any time spare and money remaining a visit to the nearby islands is also an option.
